The Matterhorn is one of the most famous mountains in the world, bordering Switzerland and Italy. People who have seen the Toblerone chocolate wrapper will recognise the shape of this mountain.
The Matterhorn can be reached by train from the Swiss resort town of Zermatt. We stayed overnight in Zermatt before our trip up to the Matterhorn. Check out the breathtaking view from the window of our accommodation, Haus la Perle, in Zermatt when we just woke up. It was indeed a sight for sore eyes.
Before we headed out to the Matterhorn, we checked-out of our apartment and locked our bags at the train station. We also checked at the train station which train tracks were opened for the day.
Matterhorn
From Zermatt, we boarded the open-air cogwheel train to Gornergrat station.
The view along the route was amazing with semi-frozen waterfall and beautiful villages.
Gornergrat
This was the best view I could get of the Matterhorn from Gornergrat. We waited and waited for the clouds to clear to take a better shot, but it did not happen, even after a meal at the cafe.
We could also visit the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise which had a glacier palace. However, since we were planning to visit the Ice Palace in Jungfrau the next day, we decided to give this place a miss. Instead, we headed to Sunnega Paradise.
Sunnega Paradise
The ride to Sunnega Paradise was fun. We took a funicular which travelled really fast upwards and through the mountain. Sunnega Paradise, from what I read online, was a place for families, with an adventure playground and animals. We did not see any of that while we were up there. Perhaps it was because it snowed heavily the night before. Nevertheless, we took advantage of the lack of tourists and let the kids play in the snow.
After Sunnega, we took a train to Interlaken where we stayed in Rugenpark B&B for the next four nights. At the time of booking, it was ranked number 1 in Tripadvisor for B&Bs in Interlaken. It was walking distance to the Interlaken train station.
NEXT DAY: Adventure to Jungfraujoch – the Top of Europe
Our trip to Zermatt was part of our 10-day Switzerland and Paris which includes the medieval city of Bern, a scenic train ride to Zermatt, Junfraujoch and Montreux. For tips on planning this trip, click here Planning a family vacation to Switzerland and Paris.
