On our fifth day in New Zealand, we ventured into the fiordland of Milford Sound, drove through the Homer Tunnel, visited Lake Manapouri before arriving in Queenstown.
Milford Sound Fiordland
The scenic drive to Milford Sound from Te Anau was about 1.5 hours. There were lots of tour buses travelling on the same road to get to Milford Sound. It was a good thing that we buffered additional time just in case traffic was bad.
Cruising on Milford Sound
This was our boat, all ready to pick us up for the 1.5 hour cruise.
It was a cloudy day for us at Milford Sound. Our photos were far from the picture-perfect postcards of Milford Sound. No prize for guessing which two photos below were from postcards, and which were not.
Be it cloudy or not, the Milford Sound cruise was a scenic one nevertheless. While the cruise brought us to see the fiords and a number of waterfalls, I recalled my geography teacher teaching us about fiords 20 years ago. Even though Mathematics was my favourite subject in school, I can’t say that I remember any single mathematical formula now, but I can still remember how fiords were formed. Amazing isn’t it how some subjects you learn and forget, and some subjects you remember for a very long time.
There was one big waterfall (below) that we got a chance to get really close to.
On the road again
After the Milford Sound Fiordland cruise, we headed to Queenstown. We saw some nice sceneries along the way and also drove through the Homer Tunnel which cuts though the mountain range.
Here’s one of the sceneries viewable from the road.
Here’s Lake Manapouri.
This lake was a short distance from Queenstown.
A warm sunset greeted us in Queenstown.
Next day: A day in Queenstown
