Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a well-preserved medieval town that is a popular tourist attraction.  Walking around Rothenburg ob der Tauber was like stepping into a children’s fairytale storybook.

It was easy to feel enchanted strolling down the cobbled streets, admiring the well-preserved medieval buildings, passing by a knight in shining armor, and a giant teddy bear!

Getting there via The Romantic Road

The Romantic Road is a long stretch of road from the northern part of Germany (Wurzburg) to the south (Fussen).  It connects several walled towns, castles, gothic cathedrals and picturesque villages.

Our journey on the Romantic Road started after we departed from Frankfurt. I had the misconception that everything would be “romantic” on the Romantic Road, with pretty villages literally lined up along the side of the road.  In reality, the road is a major highway and the villages and castles were a short drive away from the main road.

Although the drive did not feel as “romantic” as I had expected, I loved it anyway because it was the German Autobahn where some parts of the highway had no speed limit. It was like being in the middle of an exhilarating Formula 1 car race.  Powerful German cars like Audi and Mercedes whiz past us at top speed.  We tried to keep up but our little hybrid rental car was just not cut out for such speed.

Location of Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Our trip to Rothenburg ob der Tauber was part of our Europe adventures with Kids in 15 days.  After Rothenburg, we drove for about an hour and 15 mins to Gunzburg. Hotel Bettina was within a short distance from our next day’s destination,  Legoland, and had a spacious room with five beds and free wifi.  There are other family accommodations in Gunzburg too.
