Spring time in Melbourne is the perfect time to visit the annual Tesselaar Tulip Festival. Hundreds of thousands of tulips lined up in long straight rows forming an amazing sea of colours that was truly a sight for sore eyes.

I have a soft spot for tulips and have always wanted to visit the famous tulip gardens in Holland, but with kids in school, the travel dream will remain a dream.

Fortunately, when planning the trip to Melbourne, I read up about the Tesselaar Tulip Festival and straight away put it on my itinerary.  I was thankful that the Dutch couple who brought a suitcase full of tulip bulbs from Holland and built the farm 60 years ago allowed me to visit the next closest thing to Holland’s tulip gardens and farms.

We visited the tulip farm towards the end of one of our September school holiday trip.  It was the first day of the festival, and not all the tulips have fully bloomed.  If we weren’t constraint by the school holiday period, we would have visited the farm towards the end of the festival when all the tulips have fully bloomed.

Apart from tulips, there were also other equally stunning flowers in hues of pink, purple and blue.

Located in the Dandenong ranges, the Tesselaar Tulip Festival is about an hours drive from Melbourne and is typically opened from mid September to the first week of October every year.
