Have you ever tried camping by the beach? My family and I decided to go camping on East Coast Beach in Singapore during the Chinese New Year holiday when prices of flights and hotels go sky high. We got to stay overnight with a full view of the sea, and we don’t have to pay a cent! Not bad eh?
Well, when you have a great deal like that, it doesn’t come as a surprise that like-minded families did the same. Even when we arrived early in the morning, the beach was already packed with tents. Even those who were supposed to celebrate Chinese New Year were at the beach.
Some didn’t even care about shade and pitched their tents as close as possible to the beach. There were probably more than a hundred tents lining the beach, from the small four-men tent to the gigantic 10-men tent!
Learning to pitch a tent was not only educational for the kids, it was also a fun activity to do together with the family. The kiddos wanted to do all the things that they could do at a beach including cycling, skating, roller blading, swimming, building sandcastles and BBQ, and they did them all! Well, I did tell my kids to put aside any electronic games while camping.
The best part about camping at East Coast Beach was sleeping under the stars. We don’t usually see many stars in the Singapore sky, so we were pleasantly surprised to see more stars than what we usually get to see. Was it because we were near the beach, away from the bright lights or was the sky really that clear that night?
The weather at night was also perfect, and went as cool as 23 C just before dawn.
The other great part about sleeping by the beach was waking up to a gorgeous sunrise. The sun was visibly and perfectly round, but unfortunately I only had a mobile phone with me to take these pictures. It couldn’t capture how beautiful the sun looked in the morning.
Tips for camping by the beach in Singapore
If you are interested to camp overnight at a beach in Singapore, here are some useful information:
- There are 4 parks in Singapore where you can camp.
- East Coast Park – Area D and Area G
- Pasir Ris Park – Area 1 and Area 3
- West Coast Park, Area 3
- Pulau Ubin
- If you are planning to camp at East Coast Park, go for Area D which is closer to the eateries, bicycle rental shops and toilets with shower facilities.
- You need to get a permit to camp at the above places except for Pulau Ubin. The permit is free. Either go to an AXS machine or go online here and record the names & IDs of the campers. However, even if you registered online, you still need to go to an AXS machine to print the permit within 24 hours. You can also book a barbecue pit through the same application.

You can rent via GO Glamping SG on booking.com
Hi, I am planning on going by taxi, actually, to Area D. I was wondering where I should get off so that my walk to the area is shortest?
Thanks for taking the time to reply!
Hi Kim, It depends on where you will be pitching your tent. If you have booked BBQ pit 36-40, then drop at carpark D2. If your BBQ pit is 41 and above, drop at carpark D5. If the pit is 33-35, then D1. If you didn’t book any pit, then choose any one of the above.
Is it need to booking firs for make a tent in east cost area D or no need ?
Hi there, You should book first before setting up your tent.
